Cytopoint: Improving Your Dog’s Allergy Management

As Spring turns to Summer and pollen levels rise, many dogs begin to suffer from seasonal allergies. We sat down with Dr. Emily, WagWorks Head of Healthcare, to get the lowdown on what to look out for and how you can help your dog stay comfortable during allergy season.

Why are allergies more common in dogs during the warmer months?

👩‍⚕️ Warmer weather means higher pollen levels, and for many dogs, that can trigger allergic reactions. We also see a rise in house dust mites and mould spores at this time of year, which can worsen symptoms. It’s a tricky time for sensitive pups!

What’s the most common allergy-related condition you see?

👩‍⚕️Canine Atopic Dermatitis (Atopy) is very common. It’s an allergic skin disease that affects about 10% of dogs. Triggers include environmental allergens like pollen, dust mites, and mould. In some cases, food allergies can play a role too, which is why some dogs are trailed on hypoallergenic diets.

What are some of the early signs owners should look out for?

👩‍⚕️ The most common signs include licking or chewing of the paws, scratching at the face, ears, or body and ear inflammation or reoccurring ear infections. If you’re seeing this regularly, it’s worth chatting to your Vet.

What kinds of treatments are available?

👩‍⚕️ Common treatments are antihistamines, corticosteroids, topical creams, or Apoquel – all designed to ease your dog’s symptoms. A newer option gaining popularity is Cytopoint – a targeted injection containing a synthetic antibody that neutralises a specific allergy-related cell in your dog’s body. It starts working within 24 hours and provides relief for up to six weeks!

Any final advice for owners going into allergy season?

👩‍⚕️ Keep an eye out for the early signs and don’t wait until it gets really bad to seek help. Early intervention can make a huge difference, and we’ve got lots of great options to help your dog feel more comfortable.
