Bringing home a puppy can be an incredibly exciting time but it can also be challenging, if you’re not prepared. We’ve put together a guide packed with key information and advice, aimed at nurturing your puppy into a happy, healthy dog.
The Importance of Rest
Puppies need a surprising amount of sleep, typically between 14-20 hours daily. Adequate rest is crucial for their well-being, impacting everything from behaviour to learning abilities – you might notice that your puppy is particularly mouthy when they’re overtired. Provide a variety of cosy, quiet resting spots for your puppy to choose from, so they can make sure they’re in the best spot for a peaceful snooze. Keep their daily routine calm, overstimulation or excessive training can hinder their rest and lead to challenges like mouthing or house training difficulties. Balance is key, and remember sometimes less is more!
Nutritional Needs
Just like us, puppies need the right amount of food to thrive. Insufficient nutrition can lead to low blood sugar levels, making your puppy feel irritable and more prone to behaviours such as mouthing. Given the rapid growth rate of puppies, it’s crucial to adjust their food portions to align with their developmental needs. Unfortunately, not all feeding guidelines take this rapid growth into account, which can lead to hungry and unhappy puppies!
Positive Early Experiences
First impressions are lasting impressions so make sure all puppy experiences are as positive, safe and calm as can be, to help build their confidence and curiosity. It is important to expose your puppy carefully to things that will form a part of their every day routine, so they have a chance to build a positive association with them and know what to expect. Ensure you don’t overwhelm them and instead gently expand their world and experiences. Pair these introductions with treats and rewards to cement these experiences in their memory as enjoyable and happy moments!
Fulfilling Natural Behaviours
Puppies are naturally inclined to explore with their mouths. Offering a variety of chewable items like lamb braids, cow hooves or yak bars can engage them and satisfy their chewing instinct. Encourage daily chew time (1-2 hours) and exploration of diverse textures and items.
Building Companionship
Spend quality time with your puppy and make sure they feel safe at all times. Consistency and familiarity, such as the sound of your voice, are incredibly comforting. Engaging in calm activities, like reading aloud, is an excellent way to bond and something that the whole family can participate in.
Think Further than Tricks
Traditionally we have taught our dogs to ‘sit’, ‘lie down’, ‘paw’, ‘roll over.’ At WagWorks we prefer to instill what we call ‘life-skill’ training from an early age, which includes the emergency stop, waiting at a door or curbside and recall.
The best thing you can ever do for your puppy is to take the time to truly get to know them and their needs. Understanding and respecting their needs forms the foundation for a happy, healthy relationship.
Remember, every puppy is unique, and our team at WagWorks is always here to offer advice and tailored support.
